Booster Meeting Minutes

Band Minutes from Band Booster Meeting on April 16, 2009

Minutes of the March 19, 2009 meeting were passed out to attending parents: Billy Poore, Ethel Moore, Beth Patterson, Paige Bowser, and Ms. Rhodes.

Treasurer’s Report: treasurer absent Ms. Rhodes informed us that there was $1736.24 deposited to our bank account for the candle sales. No bank balance available at the present time.

Fund-Raising Discussion: Band Assistant, Paige Bowser, has set up a CHARMS account for us online. Parents and students will be able to access all fees and forms and credits via this website. More details on access to come.

Business discussed:

* Ms. Rhodes has scheduled with Wright Middle School for Middle School, Jazz Band and Concert Band to have a Spring Concert there at 6 pm on Friday, May 8th. We will have their awards and banquet after the performances. Cold Springs Store will cater at a cost of $6-7 per person. Cost for tickets: $5 for all band students and ages 10 and under, $10 per adult. A tentative menu has been planned; Ms. Rhodes will make arrangements with Cold Springs.
* Ms. Rhodes will take the band students to Carowinds on Saturday May 9th. They will not perform; this is just a fun day.
* Cassie Geer checked with the Chamber of Commerce to see about renting space for the Spring Festival. This needs to be done months in advance, according to the chamber. The idea will be re-visited at a later time.
* Billy Poore checked the Gator and truck. The truck will likely need a new battery as the present one will not hold a charge.
* Ms. Rhodes brought forth a request that the John Phillip Sousa Award be reinstated for the most distinctive Senior band member. The Band Boosters voted to reinstate this and to pay for the award, ~ $57, as well as give a $200 scholarship to this individual. Honoree will be chosen by the band director in accordance to award guidelines.
* Ms. Rhodes says there is a possibility of budget cuts when the 2009-2010 school budgets are announced. If her band budget is reduced, the Band Boosters will try to do what we can to make up the difference. ColorGuard, Band, director, and assistant will all work together to economize where we can. Some changes may be necessary in the Competition program. This will be addressed as it comes up.
* 2 required performances coming up: Saturday, May 23rd – Memorial Day Parade and Performance, and Saturday, June 6th, AHS graduation at Lander.

Our candles from Home Interior are finally here! Students who sold may pick them up at the middle school tonight after the banquet. All candles must be paid for before your order will be disbursed.

Banquet DVDs will be available for purchase. The cost will be $20.

The Grenadier Band is giving away $100 CASH!! 1 entry per dollar donated. See a band student to receive your ticket!

For the Students: Each ticket pack has 10 tickets, you are responsible for selling as many ticket packs as you take. After the first 20 tickets you sell, you get 50 cents toward your band fees! Turn in all money before picking up more tickets! Winner will be announced May 18th here on the blog! (and we will call the winner!)

Rifle Maintenance

This is your rifle, there are many like it, but this one is YOURS.
In order to keep your rifle in tip top spinning shape it needs to be taken care of! Otherwise, all those hours of practice will break your rifle into splintered bits!

I have already taped your rifle, I will not touch them again, you are responsible for taking care of your own equipment.

Materials needed:
Rifle,
strapping tape,
electrical tape,
phillips head screwdriver

Take off the bolt by unscrewing the screws in the top (righty tighty, lefty loosy)

Tape the butt as shown, using just enough to cover, pulling the tape tight, try not to let it wrinkle, you don't want a bulky butt.

Then add the electric tape - make it pretty

For the next part, it is easiest without the strap, so unscrew that here. You may need a parent or someone to help, I can never get these undone.

Tape the middle as you did the ends, overlapping the tape a bit, about 1/2 the width of the tape, use JUST ENOUGH. and yes, tape where the bolt goes, and no, don't leave holes for the screws.
Start 4 fingers from where the bolt goes (my fingers, not yours, and it doesn't have to be exact, you should be able to see where the old tape was)

End 4 fingers after the bolt, covering the neck

Go over with electrical

yes you will have wrinkles, but you shouldn't have fluff

Put the bolt back on. The screws will go through the tape, just use some elbow grease.

And around the strap hardware

Dont forget the other end

It should look like this, if it doesn't it is wrong, and you wasted your time. Do it right the first time, it takes too long to mess up.

Flag Maintenance

Being able to take care of your own equipment is important! Here is how to take care of your flags.

You will need a 6 ft pole, 2 bolts, a silk, 2 stoppers, and tape

Start with the top. The longest bolt goes in the top.
Put it in the pole, tape an x over the top, then wrap around the pole.

Put the silk on the pole, make sure you don't put it on upside down ! Usually there is a tag at the bottom of the silk, this one does not have a tag, and to make sure I put in on right I had to look at the catalog.

Tape the top of the silk to the pole, about 1/2 an inch from the top.

Place the stopper on top, there should not be excesspve tape coming from beneath the stopper.

Then tape the stopper down onto the silk, but not too far.

Time to tape the bottom of the silk, make sure the seam is straight, it should not be twisted.

Tape to the pole, this can be a little awkward.

Time for the bottom, the same as the top! Small bolt this time.

One last thing! Cheaters tri-sect the bottom half of the flag and help us with hand placement.

And now you have a nice neat well taped flag. (and a happy paige)

CHARMS is an online based system that is going to help streamline our band's financial, attendence, and grading records. Currently we are figuring the system out (if your account says you owe $7,000 don't flip out! ) For now you can log in, and update your personal information. Student ID #s are posted in the band room.

1) Click this link (bookmark for later use)
2) Enter your student's ID # if your ID number is 51 enter 0051
3) Click the personal info button and update your info! Make sure your name is spelled correctly!
4) Change password! this will be how you login from now on so make sure its something you can remember!

You can go to student forms if you like and download and print the health form for this year! Fill that out and send to the band room, or you can email it to Miss Rhodes! CHARMS is going to make communicating alot easier. Check out the CALENDER! its a public calender so you can send other people the link and they can keep up with what the band is doing too!

We are really excited about this helpful program.

All marching band members will have their pictures made at the AHS band room from 12:00 - until. Packages will cost $15 - 65 and all sales will benefit the band.

Winterguard Qualifier at Easley

The Grenadier Winterguard made their debut of the 2009 season at the Easley Qualifier on January 31. 13 Guards performed in the novice class, and the Grenadiers placed 8th. They had a great run and are excited about improving their show and their performance.
